本片讲述了在十五世纪末，玛雅文明陨落的最后时刻。男主是一个被称为“虎爪”的加夸尔（鲁迪·杨布拉德饰），是一个小部落的最强的勇士。和他爱的妻子和爱子过着幸福平静的生活。然而好景不长，加夸尔的部落遭到了其他部落的侵略。一夜之间，村落里横尸遍野，活着的也都被俘虏了。加夸尔也不例外，但在被俘虏之前，他把自己的妻儿藏了起来，为他们留下了活路。加夸尔和族人们被带到了玛雅帝国，当时的玛雅帝国已经日渐衰落。他们信仰神明，为了供奉他们的神明，建立了很多神殿，而且坚信拿活人来当作祭品，就可以得到上天的庇佑。于是他们的祭祀变得更加频繁。不幸的是，加夸尔被选为了祭品，但他不愿这样死去，于是他选择了逃跑。
